Guide to Automatic Awnings

Guide to Automatic Awnings

What are automatic awnings?

Automatic awnings are an outdoor window covering used on the exterior of your windows.

Auto awnings differ from folding arm awnings in that they are used only on windows and are designed to add privacy and light control to your home.

Folding arm awnings are used as an extension of your roof and can provide up to an additional 3 metres of shade for your backyard.

How do automatic awnings work?

These awnings are angled, and open using a hinged mechanism to let in more light. When you’re happy with the angle of the awnings, they can be locked into place to maintain the amount of light control and privacy you’re after.

Auto awning fabric options

Auto awnings have a number of fabrics to choose from when placing your order. These include:

  • Polycotton canvas
  • Acrylic
  • Mesh
  • Blockout
  • Sunscreen

To choose the best fabric for your awnings, we recommend ordering up to 6 free samples before purchasing. Testing the samples helps to gauge the level of privacy, sun protection and colour before committing to it.

Order your samples by visiting the auto awnings product page.

Benefits of choosing auto awnings

Added privacy

As auto awnings are angled downwards, they provide your home with plenty of privacy. Unlike standard indoor blinds, auto awnings don’t expose the whole window when they’re opened.

Help maintain a comfortable temperature in your home

As auto awnings sit on the outside of your window, they add an extra layer that sunlight needs to pass through, on top of the indoor blinds you’re likely to have.

This extra barrier helps to keep your home at a more consistent temperature and rely less on cooling.

Suitable for different weather conditions

Australian weather can be unpredictable at times. Feel prepared knowing that auto awnings are a great option to suit a variety of climate conditions as they’re designed to be a heavy duty and durable product.

Sun protection

One of the biggest benefits of automatic awnings is their ability to significantly reduce the amount of sunlight into your home. This reduces the level of exposure that your furniture and skin receives, making it safer to be near windows when the UV level is high.

Colour options

Create the perfect decor and colour palette throughout your home by matching your window coverings.

How to clean auto awnings

Cleaning your window coverings is important as it helps them to look nicer and last longer.

The easiest way to clean your awnings is to start by hosing them down. You want the fabric to be damp, but not soaking wet.

Next, use a microfiber cloth to wipe them over. If you do this regularly, using water should be all you need, but you can add a little bit of detergent to help remove any grime build-up.

Measuring for automatic awnings

One of the most important aspects of ordering new blinds is getting the measurements correct.

For a ‘face-fitting’ auto awning , you need to have at least 50mm past the window opening on both sides to ensure the awning functions as it should.

To get the most accurate measurement, repeat your measurements three times.

We recommend that you add an extra 200mm (20cm) to the width and drop of the window to clear it on all sides.
