Harvey Explains: How do blinds work?

Incorrect use of blinds is the number one way to shorten the lifespan of your window treatments (aside from your furry family members, this is). Luckily for you, we've taken the time to explain how some of our most popular indoor blinds work so that you can enjoy seamless operation every time.

How do blinds work

Window blinds work in a number of different ways, the most common being by cord, wand or chain operating mechanism.

Blind cord: For blinds featuring a blind cord, you pull the strings attached to the bottom of the window dressing. Pulling the blind cord raises the blinds and release the cord lowers the blinds.

Blind wand: If your blinds have a wand, you either rotate or pull the wand. Rotate the blind wand to adjust the angle of your blinds and pull the wand to gather the blinds to one side.

Blind chain: If your blinds have a looped chain, simply pull the blind chain up or down to raise or lower the blinds.

How do roller blinds work?

Roller blinds work with the aid of a simple chain that's looped around a chain mechanism. Pull the blind chain closest to the window to raise the roller fabric, or pull the blind chain closest to you to reverse the motion and lower the fabric.

If you've ever pulled the chain in the wrong way, this can cause the chain to get stuck and become non-operational. Fortunately, this is a problem that's simple to resolve yourself!

To fix a broken roller blind chain, start by taking the blind down. Once the blind is down, pop out the chain drive and undo the middle screw to remove the old chain. If you require a roller blind replacement chain, please get in touch with our team, as all of our products come with a two-year warranty.

How do Roman blinds work?

Our Roman blinds work the same way as our roller blinds do. They work with an easy-to-operate blind chain system.

How do venetian blinds work?

Venetian blinds are one of the styles people find trickiest to operate, but once you know what you're doing it's simple. These indoor blinds are controlled with both a wand and a pulley cord system. The wand is twisted to tilt the slats to your desired angle, while the cords work to raise and lower the slats. Here's how:

  1. Pull the strings downward to lift up the blinds, continuing to pull until you reach the top of the window, or until you reach a good stopping point. Then, you can let the strings/cords go.
  2. To lower the blinds, pull the blind cord down at a 45-degree angle. Then, begin to loosen your grip to let the cord slide through your hand. Once the blinds have been lowered to your desired level, adjust the string so that it's parallel to the window frame.

How do vertical blinds work?

Our vertical blinds feature vertical fabric panels (known as slats) that are clipped to a sliding track and operated with a wand. Each of these slats are joined together by individual weights to ensure each one is evenly weighted across the length of the track.

To work vertical blinds, rotate the wand counter-clockwise to open the slats and allow light into the room. To close the blinds, twist the wand clockwise. The wand can also be pushed across the length of your window/door to move all of the panels of the side and reveal more of the glass - improving your view in the process!

How to operate automatic blinds

As the name suggests, automatic blinds are blinds that are electronically controlled via a remote control, sensor, smartphone, tablet or even a third-party home-automation system. Whenever you want to raise or lower your remote blinds, you don't have to worry about using a manual chain or rope system, simply use the remote control, wall switch or even your smartphone, depending on the automated system.

Here at Half Price Blinds, we offer motorised roller blinds, vertical blinds, Roman blinds, and Venetian blinds with remote controlled operation. If you have these styles already but with manual operation, they can also be retro-fitted for your convenience.
