4 Tips for Getting Your Home Ready for House Guests

4 Tips for Getting Your Home Ready for House Guests

1. Get Vacuuming

If you don't have a huge amount of time before your dinner party or gathering, at least make sure your floors are vacuumed. The first thing your guests will step onto is the floor, which - if your home is anything like ours - will have gathered some crumbs and dirt. So, make the effort the vacuum the floor so that all the extra foot traffic doesn't run any dirt further into your carpets, rugs or flooring.

2. Stash things in storage

Another quick tip if you haven't got a lot of time on your hands is to do a sweep of the house. Grab a basket and go into each room, loading it up with everything that needs to be put away or organised later. Then, simply stash it in the laundry, cupboards or a spare room until your house guests have left. They'll never know your house was once cluttered and chaotic!

3. Wash the windows and window treatments

Windows, curtains and blinds are often overlooked when it comes to sprucing up your home but when you take time to clean them, you'll be surprised by the transformation!

Start by vacuuming away any cobwebs or allergy-inducing dust from the window corners, window coverings and even the window screens. Then, remove your curtains or blinds from the windows so that you can clean the glass with your cleaning product of choice.

To clean most blinds, all you need to do is wipe them with a microfiber cloth or a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove the majority of the dust. Then, use a damp cloth to run over the surface and let them air dry. When it comes to washing curtains, you can wash certain styles in your washing machine, just check the label before washing to make sure. Get more cleaning tips here.

4. Pretend you're a guest

If you have extra time on your hands to make home improvements, why not pretend you're a guest instead of the host. Walk through your home with a visitor's eye to get a new perspective on your home's exterior and interior.

Here's what to look out for per room:

Home exterior

Even though you'll likely spend time with your house guests in your home's interior, the exterior is what they're going to see first! Stand in your driveway and walk up to your front door, taking note of anything that needs to be cleaned or cleared, like cobwebs, leaves, dust or clutter.

Living area

You'll likely be entertaining guests in your living area, so be sure to take note of anything that needs cleaning. Think fingerprints on glass, fallen plant leaves, dust on bookshelves and clutter on tables. It's also a good idea to start putting away any items for safekeeping, such as fragile glassware or fancy rugs.

Kitchen

Aside from wiping down your bench tops and making sure your dishes are back in the cupboards, there are a few other things to do to get a clean kitchen. It's a good idea to clear out your fridge to make room for snacks and drinks, plus dust any glassware that you may need for your house guests.

Bathrooms

Scan your eyes over your shelves and benches to make sure anything you'd rather keep private is safely stored away. If you have a shower curtain, draw it closed to improve the look of your bathroom.

Cleaning tips:

  • After you've finished your walk-through, organise your list into achievable tasks to complete before your house guests arrive.
  • Avoid distractions, such as cleaning junk drawers or sorting your wardrobe! Focus on the parts of your home your house guests can see.
